The citizens of Oslo are very proud of their mounted police force--smart men and well-groomed horses comprising a unit that has been in existence since 1893; their appearance enhances any public ceremony.  The city is a peaceful one, but the mounted force is also very efficient in helping to quell occasional disturbances.  The horses are imported from Sweden, because of their size, as this helps to deter an unruly crowd.  Most indigenous Norwegian equines are small, belonging to the Baltic or Celtic pony groups.
