Native to tropics, subtropics.  Old Southern favorite.  Plants add a tropical touch.  Large, rich green to bronzy red leaves resemble those of banana (Musa) or ti (Cordyline terminalis).  Spikes of large, showy, irregularly shaped flowers bloom on 3 - 6 feet stalks in summer, fall.
