A non-toxic shrub or small tree with more numerous and more slender leaflets than Poison Sumac, and a compact, terminal cluster of small, red fruits.  Widespread over the eastern and central U.S., Smooth Sumac grows in dry soils of old fields, along woodland borders and in waste places in our mountains, piedmont, and inner coastal plain.  Late May - July [Justice, William S. and Bell, C. Ritchie, Wild Flowers of North Carolina. University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, 1968]
