The 1 to several flowering stems of this showy perennial may be 3 feet or more tall.  The compact terminal inflorescence, with individual flowers 1/2 - 3/4 inch across, is usually about as broad as long.  This southeastern species, often cultivated, is found in deciduous woods and along forest margins more or less throughout our state.  It intergrades with 2 other tall species of Phlox that have a more northern range.  May - July   [Justice, William S. and Bell, C.
