The leafless flowering stem of this rhizomatous perennial is 6 - 30 inches tall and bears several heads or inflorescences in a compact cluster.  The basal leaves, 2 - 8 inches long, have bristly hairs on each surface.  An introduced weed, more common northward, that grows in pastures, clearings, and along roadsides in our mountains and piedmont.
