The large, drooping flower, about 1 1/2 inches long, is often almost hidden by the upper leaves, which are 2-4 inches long.   Scattered in forests of the Eastern U.S. where calcareous or limestone soils are found.  In North Carolina these perennials are found only in the mountains; 3 other species occur, variously distributed, throughout the state.  April - May.  [Justice, William S. and Bell, C.
